Epic Tomorrows Short Story Writing Co-opetition 2018 for 18-25 year-olds:
Submission deadline #1 for basic story outline:
1st August 2018
Hello, my name is Tehanu / Matthew. I have created this short story co-opetition in order to give voice to the futures of you young people in this unstable planetary civilisation that we live in, and help you write your way to epic tomorrows. All young people are welcome, from anywhere in the world, but I especially offer support to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented groups, especially if you suffer from or have suffered from mental health problems. This co-opetition is open to both beginner writers and experienced writers. There is no cash prize, but to the most dedicated, talented and community-minded writers, or the ones most willing to learn, I offer you support for your writing for the rest of your lives. I mean it. If you are staggered by this loyalty, I hope that you can imagine that this kind of loyalty could be standard in the future. We will organise the specifics between us and of course there will be times when we’re not in contact so much. Sometimes I go abroad for periods of months. However, what I am offering is a solid long-term mentor in your life. Do you have that in your life?
The co-opetition is to write a story based in the future, set in your local neighbourhood. It can be the near future or the far future. The story must have a positive or a constructive ending, and show how human problems that we currently live with could be solved in the future. For instance, these problems could be related to the environment, patriarchy, race, gender, sexuality or mental health.
This is a co-opetition, not a competition. That means that you score points for co-operating with others who enter the co-opetition. I will guide you in how to do this. I can explain more if you enter.
There is no entry fee for this co-opetition.
For beginner writers, and for all of you, I can coach you in how to write a good short story. I’ll take you through the whole process. Even if you have never written anything before, I encourage you to have a go.
The first stage is to send me your idea for a short story, based on the guidelines in red above, and explain to me why this idea is important to you. Type up to a page of A4, but no more. The deadline for the first stage is 1st June 2018. I am particularly interested in hearing from people from black, asian and ethnic minority communities, and also people from the LGBTQ communities.
This is the first time that I have run this co-opetition, so I will only be accepting 13 entries for the first round. At least 7 of the entrants must be female, to counteract the male-dominated world that we still live in, and at least 7 entrants must be non-white, to counteract the domination of the world by white people and white ways of thinking. I am not against men or white people -I am both male / queer and white myself!
If you don’t make #thefirst13 but I think your ideas are good, I will put you on a waiting list, as I will be accepting new entries later in the year.
If I think your ideas are not developed enough the first time around, I will give you the opportunity to develop them and send them to me again later in the year.
In other words, no-one will be rejected.
As well as helping out young writers and creating some epic futures together, eventually I hope that I will be able to give you the option of publishing the best of your work in a way that could make you money -but that possibility is a long way away -a few years maybe- and you are not expected to go down that route if you don’t want to.
If you would like to enter the Epic Tomorrows Short Story Writing Co-opetition 2018 for 18-25 year-olds, send your idea(s) in an email or as a Word attachment to me at the email address firstname.lastname@example.org
